3 Reasons Why November is the perfect month for a Quiz Night
Before I get into this blog post an apology is definitely in order for the recent radio silence. I am never one to be lost for words however these last 6 months have definitely been quite hectic here in the office. Most of you probably wouldn’t know but for my manager Johanna , 2018 will probably go down as one of the most exciting years of her life. Last March she set off to India to meet and bring home her son Gigi, since then she has been out on adoption leave. Having personally met him I can say that [...]
2017 in Review
This time last year, I had written a similar entry about how our year had gone and it recently came up as a memory on Facebook. This got me thinking about the amount of things that have happened since then and what a lot there is to be proud of. So here goes; I give you our year in pictures: 1. We started off the year with a bang with the launch of our new website. With numerous perks, this was definitely a huge stepping stone for our unit. 2. You all know Murphy by now? 2017 marked [...]
5 things I learnt from being a part of the Master Graduation Gowns Organising Team
As you have probably learnt by now, being a part of the MUHC team is definitely not your regular office job. We do spend time in the office answering emails but we are also constantly busy juggling things around our latest project (and we take on quite a few throughout the year). Our most recent venture has been taking over the rental and distribution of Graduation Master Gowns. This past month has in fact been a mad dash and I don't think any of us have any idea where the weeks have gone. Pretty much all we have been able [...]
The Day we tried out an Escape Room
As I walked into 'Can you Escape? Escape Room Malta's' headquarters in Fgura, this was one of the first things I came across - an image of the word 'Cortisol' framed on the wall. Being an athlete I immediately made the connection with feelings of stress and tension and decided that they must be trying to over dramatize things, after all it's only a room, how hard can it be to solve riddles? I couldn't have been more wrong! Let's take a few steps back here as you are probably wondering how we even got here in the first [...]
4 Things People Working at the University Experience during the Summer Months
A lot of people ask me what it feels like to have an office based on University Grounds especially considering that I am quite a recent graduate myself. The most common question/ statement I get is ‘Ma, it’s almost like you haven’t even left University, istra!’. Well actually working on campus is a confirmation that I am no longer in fact a student (even though I still often get mistaken for one), jokes apart, you really get to see the University in a whole new light. The biggest difference, I must admit, comes in the time of summer. I remember [...]
4 people you are likely to bump into at our Quiz Nights!
Before I get into the latest blog post, let's start off with a flashback to March last year when I first heard about the University of Malta Research, Innovation & Development Trust (RIDT) and RIDT CEO, Wilfred Kenely. My CEO had recently been speaking to Wilfred and had immediately been inspired to help RIDT in some way or another so he brought in myself and Johanna (our unit's manager) for a brainstorming session. Now I don't know about the rest of you but here at MUHC brainstorming sessions are always eventful and this was no different. I don't remember the [...]
Battle of the Brains – the Calm after the Storm
So election fever is (more or less) over and we’re all left trying to pick the pieces up and get back to normal. Things got pretty heated – to put it mildly – in the weeks leading up to the election. Facebook was full of people unfriending anyone with opposing political views. And worse still, there were many arguments among friends and even in families. But what now? Will you never again speak to someone who voted for the other political party? Will you avoid any situation unless there are only fellow PN or Labour supporters? Here in the office, [...]
E.F.R.U. to the Rescue
If you’ve ever organised a large event before, you know that it’s not just about choosing a date, marketing the event and then showing up on the day. There are lots of ‘little’ details in between to think about (some of which actually aren’t little at all as the event can’t take place without them). It’s great seeing it all come together on the day after months of working on it. But as we mentioned in our previous post, it just wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Superheroes of the BRND WGN & University Ring Road Races. And [...]
10 Heroes of the 2017 BRND WGN & University Ring Road Races
It’s been over a month now since our 6th edition of the races and even though the hype is slowly dying down, here at the office we are still buzzing. A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting at my desk reading an article from the Times about the event and it really got me thinking. After every race, the winners are always put in the limelight and although they definitely deserve to have their efforts commended, sometimes we tend to take this overboard and almost worship them. In fact as a kid, being the keen athlete that I [...]
The 5 stages of Organising a Big Event
If you are one of our regular followers on social media, then I’m sure you noticed the overwhelming amount of pink that recently took over our various pages. For a few years now, March has become a special month at our office - no it’s not to do with the numerous public holidays (although I must admit I do enjoy those too) but rather because it has become a period we associate with our annual running event - The Brnd WGN & University Ring Road Races. Ever growing in popularity, the event requires a huge amount of planning and tends [...]
A Year in Review
For once the title of this entry is somewhat on point and typical for this time of the year. Sadly yes, I am one of those philosophical people who like to reflect on how the past 365 days have flashed by. Let’s face it, a lot happens in 12 months and what better way to cherish those precious moments than by pointing them out in a blog entry. Here in our office 2016 has definitely been another one for the books; it also marks my first year working for MUHC. For once I’ve decided to save the talk though, so [...]
Of Shoeboxes and Stationeries
This time last year I started working for MUHC and let’s just say that things were pretty relaxed back then. Flash forward to December 2016 and boy how the tables have turned. If you’ve ever heard anyone say the build-up to Christmas is a busy period then rest assured that ‘busy’ is an understatement. For our team, this month has been a mad dash what with keeping up with Graduation orders, numerous team building activities (stay tuned to our blog to find out all about this in my next post); oh and the various Christmas events we’ve been invited to as [...]
Not your regular day at the office
In my last piece I happened to mention December has been an eventful month for us. Ok I may have emphasised this a bit, but we’ve also had a pretty awesome time along the way. You know how they say things have a way of falling into place? Well the past month has also taught me this. A couple of months ago, I sat down with my manager, our financial controller and our Group CEO for an annual budget meeting. Like many things this year, this was my first experience and not really being the number crunching type, let’s just say [...]
4 Reasons to Buy a Graduation Memento
We are now in the month of November; for some it means the start of winter, for the more enthusiastic kind - it marks the beginning of the festive period (Christmas trees, Santa Clauses etc have already started to crop up in my neighbourhood). Here on Campus, all anyone can speak about is GRADUATION; from buscades and hijacked lectures to Grad Ball and a general party fever, it’s safe to say that this is a pretty great time at the University. If you are a student that is…. It’s funny to think that 12 months ago I was a part [...]
A COMFORT ZONE IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE….BUT NOTHING EVER GROWS THERE.
Being an endurance athlete I’ve slowly had to learn this and apply it to my training because let’s face it, the feeling of being outside a comfort zone sucks big time and many a time I’ve backed off slightly during intense workouts (silently hoping none of my coaches read this). Recently we organised a team building event at the University Residence in Lija. Our company has been organising these events for a couple of years now but this was my first experience ensuring that things ran smoothly. I’m going to be honest here and say that being the adventurous person that [...]
Lights, Camera, Action
If you are thinking on the lines of filming then you’re correct in having figured out the theme of our latest entry. These past few days have been a bit of an adventure for me - from witnessing a six foot tall camera man whiz up and down on his skateboard to dumping my car in the middle of Regional Road let’s just say I’ve seen it all by now. Definitely not your typical day in the office but here at MUHC we aren’t exactly your ‘normal’ bunch 😉 Ok I’m guessing I’ve lost you at this point but fear not [...]
A QUIZ NIGHT TO WRITE HOME ABOUT
You are probably thinking that I’m being a bit dramatic with the title for our latest entry. OK maybe it is a bit over the top but spirits are still super high from last Friday’s BATTLE OF THE BRAINS event that we held at the University Residence. Let’s just say, it was definitely one for the books! Before I go off on one about how things panned out, let’s flash back to where the idea first sprung from. I remember sitting at my desk probably munching away at the time (it tends to go this way in our office), when [...]
MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS: 3 things I learnt
5 months ago, when I first came up with the idea of a ‘Meet the Team’ blog entry I had two things in mind. Primarily I wanted to build awareness (because hey that’s what marketers are meant to do). Having only worked with the company for a few months I also had another motive behind this. I wanted to find out more about my co-workers and what better way than to have a justification to ask the most random questions ever. And that is exactly what I did - I asked away and if you’ve read any of these posts then [...]
Meet the Team Mondays – Reggie Bartolo
I know it has been a while since I wrote about my recent work antics but things have been a bit hectic and I also just haven’t had that ‘Eureka Moment’ lately to get me into blogger mode. Well, until yesterday that is! I was having a conversation with my boyfriend and for some reason I happened to mention my colleague Reggie. Usually my work related conversations with any of my family members tend to be quite one sided with a bunch of nodding from the other party (because we all know how much I can talk if given the opportunity) [...]
THE LIFECYCLE CHALLENGE – I’ll Eat To That.
If you’ve never heard of the LifeCycle Challenge then you’re probably wondering what my latest entry is all about. If you are familiar with this brutal cycling event that is organised yearly then you’re probably just as lost. Here’s a picture of some of this year’s brave participants en route in Zambia to make you feel even more baffled. But fear not, because it’s all about to make complete sense as I present our latest Event : A Taste of Italy. I first learned about the LifeCycle Challenge when I was about 12 years old. Back then my mum’s company [...]
WORK HARD PLAY HARDER
As I’ve said in the past, my blog entries tend to come through inspiration from my current affairs. So it’s no surprise that just over a week after the annual music concert ‘Isle of MTV’, I’ve based the title on one of the headliners’ lyrics. But before you start thinking this is going to be all about ‘partying hard, etc. etc. (you all know the song 😉 ) ’…, I’ll throw in another quote to explain exactly where I’m going with this: “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life” Hehe, this is kind [...]
Video killed the Radio Star
I guess this is quite a random title for my latest post but it’s somewhat radio related plus I really like the song :). So what has the radio got to do with my recent work antics anyway ? Well here’s something you probably didn’t know - my office is actually based at a radio station, Campus FM 103.7, forming part of my company MUHC. This is the University of Malta’s radio station and it boasts educational programmes involving both students and lecturers alike on numerous occasions. Although my work rarely entails anything related to the radio station since I [...]
MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS – Hannah Pace
I had just started writing that I really like this photo of Hannah and then realised that you’re probably wondering why she’s writing that about herself. But of course this time it’s not Hannah writing! So in our first Meet the Team Mondays post when Hannah interviewed me, she also wrote the story of how we met at a swim-run in Ta’ Qali in 2010. To tell the story from my point of view, I remember being really impressed by how strong this young athlete was not just in the run, but also in the swim. And we chatted afterwards and [...]
5 WAYS WORKING WITH MUHC HAS CHANGED MY LIFE
I know I’ve been a bit quiet lately but writing a blog isn’t something you can do to command (or at least not for me). An idea tends to just pop into your head, you start writing and boom before you know it you’re figuring out how to conclude. So there I was sitting at my desk, when it hit me that I’ve been working with the company for 6 months now. Although half a year is a long period, it seems like way more and not because I’ve sat there counting away the hours but rather on the contrary. [...]
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”
I’m not usually one to comment about public affairs and I promise this will not be turning into that type of blogger but I really think that this is becoming a huge issue in Malta. Google “Malta Obesity” and the amount of articles that pop up is overwhelming. The fact that our country’s obesity crisis caught the eye of the New York Times last year is even more worrying when you consider that America is constantly being criticised for its unhealthy diet. What are we doing about this? Apart from numerous articles on local newspapers and the occasional post on [...]
How I spent my Birthday Eve
A year ago I would have never expected to spend the eve of my birthday at work, but then again I’m not someone who tends to plan things out (some call it disorganised, I prefer the term ‘relaxed’). So what was I up to at the University Residence in Lija in the early hours of the morning on the 21st of May? Only announcing the winners of Our Biggest Quiz Night to date !!!! Although technically I was ‘working’ on the night, I had a blast watching people’s reactions and more importantly (just kidding….kind of) there was CAKE. Thanks Johanna for being [...]
MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS – Paul Xuereb
It’s that time again; folks I give you PAUL. Excuse the cheesiness of my opening phrase but I always get enthusiastic about these blog posts. Being so spread out you don’t get to hang out with colleagues much and so its always cool to learn something about the people you work with. With Paul, I’m particularly excited to see what he had to say because he comes across as being quite quiet and reserved. Paul was one of the first people I met when I started working for the company (he’s also based on campus). What immediately fascinated me about [...]
5 REASONS WHY QUIZZES ARE AWESOME.
Definitely not the way I had envisioned my next blog post…. but lately the team has been busy planning our next event “Battle of the Brains” - a quiz night with a bit of a difference. I’m going to be honest here, I’m not usually the ‘quiz type’ but being directly involved in all the planning including coming up with fun ideas for rounds and questions got me thinking - QUIZZES ARE ACTUALLY THE BOMB!! Here’s my take on why everyone should attend at least one quiz night in their life: 1. Ladies love a smart guy Remember that dumb guy [...]
MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS – Joe Azzopardi
It isn’t every day you get the opportunity to interview your CEO, let alone have the freedom of asking the most random questions you could dream of. Needless to say I was particularly excited about this blog post so I asked away, but don’t worry I didn’t make him sweat too much (although I did have a phone call where he seemed particularly baffled by one of the questions). Again this is not your typical picture of a company CEO, but then again, Mr A. (as I like to call him) is definitely one of a kind. I particularly like [...]
A Tucked Away Haven for Kids
Being an only child has a lot of perks but you know how the grass is always greener on the other side - well that is exactly the same for me. My entire childhood, I longed for a sibling but sadly I’m now 22 and still nothing. It had the repercussions of a lot of adult company but not much interaction with kids my own age. To this day in fact I tend to get on with people who are older than me. But what has all of this got to do with our latest blog post? Well last week we visited [...]
HOME IS WHERE THE POOL IS
For someone who’s religiously in the pool by 6am most mornings and whose favourite cologne is ‘eau de chlorine’, this is particularly accurate. But even for the more normal people who are not so energetic at weird hours of the morning, this is somewhat true - a pool always makes things look more attractive. Before getting into the ins and outs of why I started off this blog post talking about swimming pools, I need to explain things a bit. You see, our company, MUHC operates from a number of different locations. I tend to work from an office at Campus [...]
MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS – Johanna Galea
This is definitely not your typical photo of a manager or the one I would have been given had I asked my boss Johanna Galea for a picture to go along with her short bio (But then again neither are the questions I asked her). Having said this it captures one of my most cherished moments, just after racing at the European Triathlon Championships in Alanya in 2013; this was my first triathlon race abroad and it was so great to have Johanna (or as we know her Jojo) be a part of it. Having said this, primarily I chose [...]
A Man and his Pink Morph suit
As if organising the BRND WGN & University Ring Road Races wasn’t enough, we wanted to live up to our promise of stepping things up. One of the main scopes of this event is to raise money for Hospice Malta, in fact half the proceeds are always donated to the cause. But then we met the BRND WGN crew and that’s where we had our ‘Eureka’ moment. We were able to make use of their Wagoneer in chief - Murphy (the mysterious man in the pink morph suit) and set him the challenge of running for a cause. BECAUSE WHAT STANDS OUT [...]
March Madness
See the epic look on this kid’s face, giving it everything he has, well I’d like to think that my (and probably most of the teams’) face looked like that for a good part of the beginning of this month, in the build up to the BRND WGN & University Ring Road Races. Unlike this kid, I did not run the actual race but organising it was just as strenuous (and yes I am a runner so I can actually relate to what this kid is going through). The Malta University Holding Company has been organising this event since 2013 [...]
AN INTRODUCTION
We are a pretty interesting bunch here at Malta University Sports & Leisure, but what really goes on behind the scenes? Here’s to the start of our blog with the aim of keeping everyone in the picture as to who we are and all of our latest escapades. But before we get going, here’s a little something about the actual company. As part of the Malta University Holding Company Ltd, we organise various sports and leisure activities such as team building activities and other activities for the general public, Malta University Language School students and University students and staff. We also organise [...]
